My Vote Counts

The Truth About Huckabee and Iowa Caucus Info

Governor Huckabee will have the vote of my husband and me at our local caucus tomorrow. If you're still undecided, or are in favor of Governor Huckabee and need to be prepared to speak in his favor, print out article below and and take it with you to caucus. The article was written by Susan Geddes. Well done, Susan!

By the way, you may register as a Republican, if you haven't already, at your local caucus event. Be sure to arrive early, however. Caucus proceedings begin promptly at 7pm; children are welcome; just step out into the hallway if they become fussy, and be sure to return in time to vote. You may go to www.iowagop.org for info regarding your caucus location.

Happy Caucusing!

The Truth About Huckabee, by Susan Geddes

We need to know the truth, so here it is.

Huckabee Is Conservative on National Defense
Based on a quote in Huckabee’s article on National Affairs, where he disagreed on President Bush’s foreign policy, opponents are saying, “Huckabee sounds more like a liberal Democrat than a conservative.” When I first heard it, I felt somewhat disappointed. But then I went and read the entire article from where the quote was taken. I was impressed! What I found was thorough and clear presentation on foreign affairs. Obviously, those who made the quote and claim Huckabee to be liberal on defense have not read the whole article. After I read the whole thing, I didn’t find anything that sounded like a liberal. I thought it sounded like Ronald Reagan.
And for those of us who understand how important it is for the United States to support Israel, Huckabee is absolutely committed to Israel’s right to their land!

Huckabee Is A Conservative on Immigration
First, Jim Gilchrist, founder of the Minuteman Project has endorsed, Mike Huckabee! That should pretty much say it all. Read his official Border Policy at www.mikehucabee.com and you will see that it is as tough as anyone’s.
However, as I understand it, the entire case against Huckabee on this issue centers around his support of a program that would have qualified top achieving students for a scholarship program, (not in-state tuition breaks) who were applying for citizenship. It would have included about 30 students.

Huckabee Is Not Soft On Crime
Romney seems to be the main one who is pushing the “soft on crime” issue. But Huckabee presided over 16 death sentences. That is not “soft on crime.” Neither did Huckabee ever pardon a murderer who was in jail. Even in the Dumond case, he thought about it, but decided not to. It was the parole board who set him free.
Huckabee had 8700 requests come across his desk as Governor. He denied about 90%. Most pardons were for people who committed small crimes at a young age, many who did not even spend time in jail, or who were no longer in jail. The pardon removed it from their record so they could move on in life without that hanging around their necks.
Romney had 100 requests for commutations come before him as Governor of Massachusetts and granted none. Romney would not even grant a pardon to a decorated soldier from the Iraq war who had shot another boy with a BB gun (didn’t break skin) when he was 13. This record was preventing the man from applying for a job as a police officer. I don’t think Romney was taking his job seriously.
Romney accuses Huckabee of reducing the sentence for meth offenders. Huckabee did support a bill (drafted by Arkansas' state prosecutors to address overcrowding in the prisons) that reduced the amount of the sentence served from 70% to 50% before the person was eligible for parole. The penalty for this crime in Arkansas remained 10 years minimum and 40 years maximum. Yet in Romney's Massachusetts, the minimum is 2-1/2 years and the maximum is 10 years. Romey's "get tough" bill (which never passed) would not have increased that sentence.

Huckabee is a Fiscal Conservative
Calling Mike Huckabee a fiscal liberal just doesn’t stack up. He wants to eliminate the IRS for crying out loud! He advocates the Fair Tax system that does not penalize citizens for being productive. In other words, he is not a socialist. In my view, this makes him more fiscally conservative than all the Republican front runners!
He also advocates a transparent policy on Federal spending where government expenditures would be public information that can be seen online at any time. The government wouldn’t be buying any more of those $5000 claw hammers if this were the case!
When you look at Mike’s overall record in Arkansas, you will see that 1) he does believe in cutting taxes (he did so 90 times as governor of Arkansas) and 2) that there were some unique circumstances in that state that skew the picture. First there was an Arkansas supreme court decision that required a tax hike for education. Governor Huckabee had no option but to sign it. Second there was a tax that was used to fix a crumbling road system that Clinton and Tucker left as the worst in the nation. That tax was voter approved by about 80%! These two issues alone account for most of the “tax increase” in Arkansas.

Huckabee Is A Moral Conservative
Huckabee’s opponents are calling him a liberal in every area except the moral issues. No one dares go there because he is so strong on these issues. There may be many issues where new information might cause a man to change his view. But when it comes to abortion, the facts have been readily available for a long long time. Anyone who has only recently changed his mind on this issue (like Romney) has either been living under a rock or has a serious moral void. Mike Huckabee has always stood on the side of the innocent unborn and has supported the family and traditional marriage as the bedrock of our society.

Final Thoughts
Huckabee also has other conservative credentials. He is a strong supporter of the second amendment and the right to bear arms and he is a defender of national sovereignty, just to name a couple more.
To criticize Mike Huckabee, they are really having to dig deep and then they have to do some fabricating. They have even resorted to attacking his son for supposedly abusing a dog 10 years ago when, as a camp counselor, a mangey dog, that was acting aggressively, had to be put down.
I got a piece in the mail the other day full of numerous accusations (things that have come up during his other elections in Arkansas and found to be baseless). I thought to myself, “If half this stuff was true, Huckabee wouldn’t be running for president, he’s be behind bars!”

You may not agree with everything about Mike Huckabee, but you can’t call him weak, inexperienced, dishonest or a liberal! On January 3rd I am going to go to my Iowa Caucus (and take as many people with me as possible) and support Mike Huckabee. I hope you will do the same.

 New Huckabee Endorsements

Below is a new press release from Huckabee Headquarters. Several prominent leaders are now endorsing Governor Huckabee, and more are sure to follow.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Des Moines, IA – Flanked by several dozen members of the Iowa clergy, Republican Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee today announced his campaign’s Iowa Pastors Coalition, the endorsement of Iowa family values leader Chuck Hurley and the support of nationally known religious leader Tim LaHaye and his spouse, Beverly LaHaye, who founded Concerned Women of America.

“I'm honored to have the support and encouragement from this fine group of faith leaders,” Huckabee said. “We share a commitment to preserving life, strengthening families and making this country a better place for all Americans.”

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas who now leads the polls in Iowa and has vaulted to second place in national polls, also announced the support of Luana Stoltenberg, a Davenport pro-life activist.

Hurley, the president of the Iowa Family Policy Center, is a former state legislator who has devoted his career to strengthening Iowa’s families by championing traditional values. “I’m humbled and honored to support such a fine man for such a vital office at this vital time,” said Hurley, who noted the endorsement was a personal one and not on behalf of the IFPC.

Stoltenberg has been involved with Crisis Pregnancy Center in the Quad Cities. She also has been a board member and spokesperson for the Life and Family Coalition. A former supporter of Sen. Sam Brownback’s presidential effort, Stoltenberg is active in Operation Outcry: Silent No More.

Huckabee said he welcomed the support as candidates continue to battle for support as the Iowa caucuses are just 30 days away.

The LaHayes are prominent national leaders who have provided a strong moral compass for America. “During the 25 years I have known Mike Huckabee, he has proven himself to be a Christian conservative who stands without apology for the pro-life, pro-marriage platform that is so important in this time of moral collapse,” Tim LaHaye said.

Beverly LaHaye said, “I support Mike Huckabee because he is genuinely pro-life – true to Biblical morality – a man of absolute faith in God and courageous enough to try to do something to bring America back to its foundation.”

 Huckabee Rising: #1 in Iowa!

Governor Mike Huckabee has taken the lead in Iowa polls. In all other recent national polls, he is rising and registers with double digits.

Amazingly, his progress has been made with a fraction of the cost of other campaigns. Huckabee's clear message of faith, family and freedom is resonating with conservative voters who are using the age-old medium of word-of-mouth to share the news.

There is little doubt that Huckabee can place in the top three among early state caucuses and primaries.

 Case in Point

I was watching the 10:00 news tonight on local Des Moines channel 8, KCCI, and they listed, both verbally and with photos and in print, every last one of the democratic candidates.

Who was the ONLY republican candidate mentioned? Mike Huckabee. Why was his name given any press time? The new Chuck/Huck commercial.

First Huckabee TV Ad Airs Today!

Presidential hopeful, Mike Huckabee, has teamed up with Chuck Norris to produce his first TV ad which airs in selected areas in Iowa today.

This is not your grandpa's political TV ad. It's funnier by far than the Chris Dodd barber shop commercials or the Bill Richardson job interview spoofs. I can't think of any Republican ad that is even comparable.

The purpose of any ad is to generate buzz. Unbelievably, FOX news and other stations are airing the Huckabee ad during their news shows just because of its hilarity. Any ad that gets FREE airtime is worth its weight in gold. How many other presidential ads have you seen played during prime time news for their newsiness? (That's my own new word, I think.)

Some Huckabee supporters are worried that the commercial does little to address the serious issues of the presidential campaign, and may actually damage Huckabee's credibility as an electable candidate.

Oh, ye of little faith.... There will be plenty of opportunities for both Huck and Chuck to respond with all seriousness to the ad as they become sought after for comments and rebuttals. As people search the web for more on Huckabee upon seeing this spot, they'll find plenty of serious. Personally, I think it's a brilliant strategy!

Even if the ad doesn't appeal to you personally, you have to admit that it's effective. Besides, the ad wasn't meant to reach the Huckabee faithful; preaching to the choir isn't what needs to be done.

Honestly, I believe two groups can be effectively reached with this ad. My dad and my father-in-law, both over 60, will love it. I also think the 18-35 demographic will appreciate the fresh approach. Those in-between may have to wait for the next ad before they fall in love with Huckabee, but at least they'll know his name.

Huckabee is electable!
